Puthumai Annual Hackathon

Puthumai means innovation in Tamil

Student developers claim first place among more than 400 high school and college competitors with innovative debate indexing software

Coders Over Borders successfully hosted its Puthumai Hackathon, bringing together more than 400 high school and college students for a competitive event centered on programming, creativity, and technological innovation. Among the participants, Arnav Dham and Leo Yadav emerged as the competition's overall winners, earning first place for their development of an innovative debate indexing software solution.

The name Puthumai means “innovation” in Tamil, which is the spirit the event was built around.

The hackathon provided an opportunity for aspiring programmers to demonstrate their technical abilities, collaborate on projects, and develop software aimed at solving real-world problems. With participants ranging from high school students to college-level developers, Puthumai attracted a diverse group of competitors with different levels of programming experience.

Dham and Yadav distinguished themselves through their debate indexing software, a project designed to improve the organization and accessibility of research materials used in competitive debate. The software addresses a common challenge faced by debaters, who frequently work with extensive collections of evidence, arguments, and research documents. By focusing on a specialized problem, the duo demonstrated how programming skills apply to challenges beyond traditional software applications.

Their first-place finish was particularly impressive given the size and diversity of the competition. Competing against hundreds of fellow students, including college-level participants, Dham and Yadav demonstrated technical proficiency, creativity, and an understanding of the practical applications of computer science.

Following the announcement of the results, Puthumai's judges congratulated Dham and Yadav on their outstanding achievement and successful project.

The event marked an important milestone for Coders Over Borders as an organizer of student-centered technology initiatives. By hosting Puthumai, the organization provided students with a platform to demonstrate their abilities, exchange ideas, and gain experience in competitive software development.

The success of Puthumai highlights the growing interest in computer science among younger generations and the importance of providing opportunities for students to apply their programming knowledge.

For Dham and Yadav, the victory represents a significant achievement in their development as programmers and innovators. Their success at Puthumai demonstrates how students are applying their technical knowledge to address problems in fields they understand firsthand, earning recognition in a competitive environment.
